Apple has posted a new version of the iPhone user guide, which includes several additions related to iPhone OS 2.2. These include instructions on Google Street View usage and more.
Some excerpts:
- “If you’re taking public transit, the overview screen shows each leg of the trip and the mode of transportation, including where you need to walk. The top of the screen shows the time of the bus or train at the first stop, the estimated arrival time, and the total fare. Tap to set your departure or arrival time, and to choose a schedule for the trip. Tap the icon at a stop to see the departure time for that bus or train. When you tap Start and step through the route, detailed information about each leg of the trip appears at the top of the screen. “
- “Turn Auto-Correction on or off: Choose General > Keyboard and turn Auto-Correction on or off. Auto-Correction is on by default.”
Apple has released iPhone OS 2.2. Among the listed improvements:
Enhancements to Maps:
- Google Street View
- public transit and walking directions
- display address of dropped pins
- share location via email
Enhancements to Mail
- resolve isolated issues with scheduled fetching of email
- improved formatting of wide HTML email
Other Enhancements
- Improved stability and performance of Safari
- Podcasts are now available for download in the iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and cellular networks)
- Decrease in call set-up failures and call drops
- Improved sound quality of visual voicemail messages
- Pressing the Home button from any Home screen takes you the first Home screen
- Preference to turn on/off keyboard auto-correction
The new release is available through iTunes, but you may need to update to iTunes 8.0.2 first.

Tonight Apple released iPhone 2.2 Software Update which includes many of the changes we've been anticipating over the past couple of weeks. Included in the update is Google Street View, public transit and walking directions, and over-the-air podcast downloads via the iTunes app. The update also includes numerous fixes including added stability in Safari and fixes for Mail.
Other features such as the anticipated tethering option have not been mentioned in the official release notes by Apple.

VoIP company DeFi Mobile announced recently that they are working to get the iPhone working on their network. DeFi would allow the iPhone to make calls over an internet connection for a monthly subscription fee. It requires a Wi-Fi connection to operate, but they claim that their partnerships expand their network to include private and personal connections.

Apple showcased six third party applications for the iPhone yesterday at a press briefing in San Francisco. Among the developers that attended were EA showing off their upcoming Need For Speed: Undercover, Gameloft showing Ferrari GT, Ngmoco's Neil Young with Rolando, HandMark Software with Zagat To Go '09, AKQA with a Target app, and Loopt's Sam Altman. An Apple patent filing has been published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark office that details a new notification system for the iPhone and iPod. While devices like the Blackberry have a small red light that turns on to let them know when they've missed a call, iPhone owners have to wake the device and turn on the display to see if a new call has come in. This should solve that problem.

A new iPhone exploit has been uncovered that would allow an attacker to cause the iPhone to make a phone call simply by navigating to a web page. The flaw was to be announced on Monday in ComputerBild on monday but was released in a press release from Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology.

The Google Mobile App is easily one of the coolest apps we've seen so far. In fact, it's almost too good, making some wonder if Google got special access to private frameworks and unpublished APIs from Apple that are forbidden in their SDK.
